  • Dual diagnosis counselors on staff to help diagnose and support those who have co-occurring behavioral health needs.
  • The Fora Health Alternative High School helps students re-engage with their education and set academic goals alongside their recovery and mental health goals.
  • A dedicated addictions counselor assigned to each young person as well as a variety of group sessions that work an evidence-based program proven to help change behaviors and outlook.
  • A family therapist assigned to each teen who ensures that support and education are addressed holistically and who empowers families to be a part of treatment.
  • An experience that 92% of patients report being satisfied with.

Engaging Education and Group Therapy

By nature, people are social creatures. Our group therapy sessions are led by trained counselors. The benefits of group therapy include reducing social isolation and witnessing the recovery of others. This approach proves particularly effective in addressing issues that are common experiences of people who struggle with substance misuse, such as depression, isolation and shame. Find out more about the types of group counseling we put into practice at our Fora Health Youth & Family Center.

Treating Mental Health Dual Diagnosis

Many people who struggle with substance use disorders (SUD) are also struggling with their mental health. This is called a Dual Diagnosis — when someone has both an SUD and a mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression, bipolar, post-traumatic stress or another psychiatric disorder. The greatest chance of success in treatment is when these issues are addressed at the same time and treated by Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP) with specialized training in treating concurrent conditions. This may include coordinating with the youth’s primary care provider for the prescription of  medication to support recovery and help with short-term stabilization or long-term medical maintenance.

Emphasizing School Credit and Education

Most young people we work with have experienced challenges at school and are struggling to get back on track. To help our teens overcome these challenges, we have a fully accredited Portland Public Alternative School onsite, where academic pursuits are a core part of our program. Students work on academics at least four hours a day. Our teaching staff are adept at helping students set achievable short-and-long-term academic goals. The teens in our care often discover a whole new appreciation for academics and develop tangible, meaningful goals toward reinforcing their commitment to recovery. We assist students with their core curriculum, credit recovery, and charting a course for planning their academic futures. In some cases, students at Fora Health prepare to take the GED, work on college applications, or take on an independent research project. The Fora Health Alternative School is unique in our region.

Living at the Fora Health Youth & Family Center

On average, teens are enrolled in Residential Treatment for 70 to 90 days, but the length of treatment varies based on the individual’s treatment plan, their goals, and their progress towards those goals.

Teens entering treatment are assigned a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor who works with them one-on-one to identify set expectations, and guide them through their program and individual therapy. Daily activities include individual and group counseling, schoolwork and academic planning, life skills training, and recreational activities such as fitness, team sports, art, games, and field trips.

Dorm rooms are double occupancy, and all programs take place on site. Fora Health employs a full-time nutritionist to ensure that we support whole health.

Putting Youth Activities Into Action

Fora Health believes in supporting the well-being of the whole person, which is why our Youth & Family Center has a modern fitness center, a basketball court, and ample opportunities for fitness and recreation. We schedule regular outings which may include hikes, movies, and cultural and sporting events. When possible, teens also participate in community service with local organizations. Activities are currently limited as we adapt to ever-changing public health circumstances.

Let’s take that step first step together in helping our young people to thrive. We’re here to take your call, answer your questions, and support you and your loved ones, call (503) 535-1151 today or schedule a call back.
